(Gastbijdrage van Wim Jan) Als het meezit, kun je volgend jaar op de Nederlandse brandstof markt Max Havelaar tanken. Het radioprogramma Llinke Soep bracht afgelopen vrijdag een programma in het teken van de Week van de Vooruitgang, met daarin aandacht voor het bedrijf Diligent, een Eindhovens bedrijf dat transportbrandstoffen van natuurlijke oorsprong in Nederland op de markt wil brengen.
De oprichters van Diligent zijn gestart met het laten groeien van de Jatropha-plant. Deze boom groeit rond de evenaar en gedijt bij weinig water en arme grond. Daar is in Tanzania genoeg van te vinden. De noten uit de boom zijn giftig, zodat vraat door geiten of koeien de oogst niet bedreigt. En al zijn ze niet geschikt voor voeding, je kan er wel olie uit persen, die een goede vervanging is voor diesel.
Indiase boeren ontdekten dat Jatropha olie, anders dan veel bronnen van Biodiesel, kwaliteiten heeft die zonder verdere bewerking sterk lijken op de bestaande commerciële diesel. Boeren die Jatropha-olie gebruiken, geven aan minder vervuilde uitlaatgassen uit hun tractor te stoten, terwijl de motor soepeler en minder lawaaiig loopt en de helft minder onderhoud vergt.
Vele delen van de Jatropha-plant worden van oudsher al gebruikt bij inheemse culturen. Ook de olie kent al toepassing als medicijn, smeermiddel of brandstof. Het verbouwen, oogsten en verwerken van Jatropha biedt veel locale werkgelegenheid. Om deze reden laat Diligent het persen van de zaden tot olie in het land van herkomst plaatsvinden. Een ander voordeel is dat de overblijvende perskoek ter plaatse nuttig kan worden toegepast.
Inmiddels verzorgen de boeren in Tanzania 100 hectare vol Jatropha plantjes. De opbrengst wordt gegarandeerd en tegen een vaste bodemprijs gekocht door Diligent. Volgens plan moet er aan het eind van dit jaar 1000 hectare worden verbouwd. Een jaar later kan de brandstof in Nederland worden geïmporteerd.
Zo snijdt het mes aan twee kanten: niet alleen is plantaardige olie een duurzame, CO2-neutrale brandstof, tevens wordt bijgedragen aan een eerlijke verdeling van de welvaart doordat ondernemers uit de Derde Wereld met de verkoop van de olie aan hun toekomst kunnen bouwen.

In Senegal zijn er ook enige activiteiten met de Tabananni zoals de Iatropha in het Wolof heet. Ikzelf heb teveel om handen om diep in deze materie te duiken, maar als iemand deze zaken (op een iets bescheidener schaal om te beginnen) zou willen aanpakken dan zijn er zeker mogelijkheden. De Iatropha als omheining grootschalig aanplanten tegen het loslopende vee, en de vruchten oogsten om er biodiesel van te maken was jaren geleden al mijn idee. Door teveel aan andere zaken is het nooit goed uit de verf gekomen, helaas.
