De minihuis trend komt uit de Verenigde Staten waar een heel netwerk bestaat van mensen die minihuisjes bouwen.
Gek genoeg mag klein wonen in Nederland en België niet zomaar. Volgens het Nederlandse bouwbesluit moet een huis minstens 24 vierkante meter zijn. Sommige minihuisjes uit de VS zijn niet groter dan 8 vierkante meter — 3 keer te klein dus. Dus technisch gezien zou je van een minihuis niet je permanente verblijfplaats mogen maken.
De minihuisjes hebben meestal allerlei slimme oplossingen om ruimte te besparen. Ze zijn echter niet persé heel goedkoop, zeker per vierkante meter gerekend. Minivarianten van keukens, kachels en andere apparaten zijn relatief duur.
